Selecting a Web Designer

When selecting a web designer, consider this. What is the type of service model the designer or design house provides? Why might you care? Well, because some of the issues that you will be dealing with once your website is launched can easily become huge headaches if they are not fully considered during the selection process. I recommend that you learn the major differences and try to determine the pitfalls, strengths and weaknesses of each method that is offered before you make your final choice about which method you’d like to focus on. Therefore, here’s a list of some of the most common types of service models that designers or design houses offer. Repeating monthly service fee. The one price for the entire web package service fee. There’s also the flat rate per page with add-on items as needed. Which one is right for you?

One price per job solutions are sometimes based on standardized templates and do not typically support custom design changes. Standardized templates use your images, logo and colors and plug them into predetermined locations. They are still standardized templates.

A key downfall to the template approach is that it may be difficult to make changes to the layout once your information has been added. Some companies can provide this service, but actual implementation of the updates may have major limitations. Since skilled web designers are not regularly employed, the service provider may have difficultly incorporating a change that can flow with the original design. This “issue” can affect the entire look and feel of the web sites pages. Changes that have been added to your website “must” flow with the rest of your design. Otherwise, your customers become focused on the design flaw rather than your message. One of the key aspects to look for in long term Web site ownership is the ability to have flexibility in the layout. As your company grows, you want your website to grow too. Make your initial investment count for the long term by chosing a designer that meets your needs from start to finish and beyond.

The monthly recurring fee method locks you into a service contract for a set period of time. Some may find this method desirable, but most find that this type can fall short when it comes to updates. You want your updates to be timely. What do you do when you receive less than stellar service on these multiple fronts? You’ll continue to pay for that less than stellar service just because it’s easier to stay than start over again. Why settle for less, though, when you can have a custom design at nearly the same price?

Do I Need a Website?

I guess you could Google the subject, but I think you’ll find that the answer is a resounding yes.

Today, the first stop for information on a particular subject is a search engine. From home computing to people on the go with a Blackberry, IPhone or smartphone, search engine usage is ever-increasing. Google receives several hundred million queries per day. In order to be a potential service provider to the masses or your target market, a web presence is a necessity.

Chatham Designs provides professional web solutions with integrated services to businesses and professionals. A web presence doesn’t have to be high cost to be highly effective.

So, do you need a website?

24/7 Accessibility

The majority of businesses are interested in a website marketing solution because a website can reach customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Potential and current customers are on the web 24/7 while at work, at home and at play. When searching for products, businesses, services and information, people typically rely on the web. A website that is executed with careful and proper planning will provide positive results. Executed poorly, it can leave a negative impression in the minds of your current or potential customers. This impression occurs in a matter of seconds.

Are you considering a website for your business? Chatham Designs can guide you through the entire process. We have twenty plus years of multidisciplinary experience in design, visual communications, web marketing, web programming, computers and the web.

Our goal is to build trusting relationships with our customers.

Our solution is to create visually pleasing, functional and technically sound websites designed to match your specific vision and needs.

Our focus is to keep costs to a minimum while providing you with expert knowledge and professional services.

There are many do-it-yourself solutions available on the web today. They may look fabulous at first blush, but the majority of them provide only partial solutions and at a certain point can leave you with more questions than when you began. There is also a large base of web service companies, but it’s important to look into their customer support record. But are they flexible enough to provide you with all of the services that you’ll need now and in the future?

A website is something that grows “with” your business. It’s not just a static electronic brochure. Chatham Designs provides professionally designed and fully supported web solutions that are built with your individual goals in mind. Our expertise allows us to help you master the unknowns. We have the experience necessary to visualize the entire project from start to finish and we can offer creative solutions. Free Blog

“DESIGNing 4 the Web” uses a blog tool called WordPress. A blog can be used as a standalone website or it can be setup as an extension of an HTML based website. Once the design is in place, the interface to the WordPress blog is fairly easy to master.

Another option is a Google Blogger blog. Google blogger is a “free” blog tool that can be accessed through a Google account. You can view an example by visiting the Chatham Designs Google Blog™ weblog. Google blog files reside on the Google server, so you don’t have complete control over the files like you would with WordPress, but it’s a great way to get your feet wet.

Contact us to discuss a blog for your business. We also provide complete services and support for Website and logo design.

Welcome to “DESIGNing 4 the Web”. This blog is an extension of a passion that I’ve followed ever since I first became interested in design. I’ve always had a passion for art and computers, but the two were always separately defined and the choice seemed to be to pursue one or the other. After I caught my first glimpse of the Imaginator in the computer design lab at Sanders Associates, I realized that the two worlds would someday be within reach of everyone rather than just a few. I’ve pursued that idea with a passion ever since. I completed degrees in both graphic design and computer technologies and learned to design and develop code for the Web. Along the way I worked at Adobe Systems, where some of the best tools of this industry are developed. I now own my own Web design company called Chatham Designs LLC, located in southern New Hampshire.

During your visit at “DESIGNing 4 the Web”, my hope is that you discover something that makes a difference or sparks your passion. Never stop pursuing your dreams.
